Uncle Gabe Comes Home

Uncle Gabe made a special trip up from UC Santa Barbara to visit Zoe on Easter Weekend. He flew in on Friday night and has made fast friends with her. She greeted him bright and early on Saturday morning and he didn't seem to mind.

I like you!

So much for waking YOU up. Let's take a nap!

Gabe got the hang of soothing Zoe pretty quickly. Thanks for the hand, Bro!

Cousin Cori came all the way to Pacifica from the city to see Zoe. We had a nice lunch and hung out for the afternoon. It was a lot of fun and Zoe had lots of smiles to share.

Aunty Stephanie came by on Saturday night to celebrate Gabe's 20th birthday. We enjoyed steak and yellow cake with chocolate frosting, Gabe's favorite. Stephanie also knows how to charm Zoe to sleep. Now if only I could figure that one out.

Zoe's California Adventures Continue

The visitors just keep coming. Zoe has continued to enjoy a steady stream of nice people who love to hang out with her. Here are some more of her fans:

Leanne

On Thursday, we trekked into San Francisco to hang out with Mary's niece Kelly and her two kids, Michael, 3 and Bailey, 19 months. They are the sweetest kids. Michael sang "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" to Zoe when she cried and Bailey told me that Zoe was "cute".

Kelly read all the kids a story before naptime. Bailey wanted to show off for the camera before hitting the pillow. So cute!

Although Zoe is very cute in this picture, I thought the pose kind of strange considering it is the week before Easter. Hmmm...

We headed to Palo Alto on Friday where we visited Great Aunt Amy. She has a super cool house and we got to hang out in the back yard on a really sunny day. Amy knew just how to make Zoe feel welcome. Great Grandma Pat even stopped by.

Zoe's First Weekend in California

So we arrived safely in San Francisco and are nestled in Pacifica with Grandma and Grandpa. Grandma Mary waits on us hand and foot and treated me to a massage today. She is so good to us! Grandpa seemed to have the golden touch with Zoe. He's even the first one to volunteer to hold her when she has her nightly fussing fit. This has been a recent discovery. Every night at around 7pm she erupts in some heavy duty crying for about an hour. It appears to be a build-up of gas but the reason doesn't seem to matter much when we are trying to get her through it.

Zoe had lots of visitors this weekend. The Yuba City gang came down for a BBQ and ice cream cake. It was great to see everyone again and they all got to spend some good time with her. Here are some shots of Zoe making the rounds.

So YES! We suck!

Our apologies to our followers for the lack of updates.  Though it's no excuse, computer problems have made updating a lot more difficult.  Our new computer should be arriving any day, so no more excuses.

Zoe is growing like a weed.  Along with greater drool production, she is starting to talk and just two days ago, she squealed at me.  She is also a lot more aware of her surroundings.  When we walk down the street, she will look from side to side to check out the 'hood.  I think she approves.

We are preparing for our big trip to the West Coast.  Packing should be interesting and I am definitely not looking forward to it.  Aaron and I enjoyed our fourth anniversary last night.  Real low key with Japanese take-out and finishing up Battlestar Galactica.  I have to say, the finale was a serious letdown.  Aaron and I were waiting for more explosions and for "Earth" to implode.  Very disappointing.  Apologies to those who have no idea what I am talking about.

The following pictures are my attempt to catch everyone up before we head west.  I do plan to continue the updates during our trip if technology allows and in most cases, it will.

Zoe napping in her great grandfather Nono's cradle.  It
really is the most perfect bed.

She is giving us a lot more grins these days.

Here we are playing a little dress up.  The look on her face just screams,
"Oh please, mom.  Give me a break".

We went to a play group with Candace and Emma
and made some new friends.

This is Henry and his mom Kristen.  Just look at those cheeks!

That is one impressive stream of drool.  You go Emma!

I AM THE WORST MOM EVER! Okay, so that's a little dramatic.  I was trimming her fingernails and got too close and nipped the tip of her thumb.  SO HORRIBLE!  She cried for a minute and then was over it, way before I was.  I do have to commend myself on fashioning a baby Band-aid.

Zoe is looking a little boyish (but still oh so cute) in this picture but I really posted it for the impressive arm pit hair in the background.  Go Dad!!

The Story of Zoe's Birth

So I figure I better write all this down before I forget it. So here goes. After two weeks of waiting past the due date and being told how big she was, I thought I would never go into labor. I was debating castor oil, even though I was not dilated or effaced. On Tuesday night, Feb. 17th, I made a joke before I went to bed. I thought it would be awesome to wake up at 5 am the next morning with strong contractions and we could have us a baby. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!

At 3 am, I woke up to go to the bathroom and noticed I was having some good contractions. That must have been what woke me up. And I thought it was just my ever-shrinking bladder. I started to time them, knowing the birth center wanted me to call them the first time when they were nine minutes apart. Within the first 30 minutes, they were 7-8 minutes apart but had moved to 5-6 minutes in the second 30 minutes. I called Asya and told her I was in labor. She told me to call her when they were 4 minutes apart.

It was 4 am and I took a shower and started to get my things together. Aaron, of course, was making coffee in the kitchen. The contractions were getting stronger. Mom started timing them at 5 am and they were 3 minutes apart. I was trying to drink water but ended up vomiting. We called Asya again at 6 am and she told us to meet her at the birth center in one hour. While trying to find a certain pair of pants, we had to dig through our laundry bag to find them on the bottom. Now there were clean clothes all over the bed. So I spent my time in early labor putting my laundry away.

The ride to the birth center was torturous. How do women sit and labor? We got to the birth center a little after 7 am and were greeted with a smile by Asya. She told me I wasn't ready yet- I was still smiling. She examined me and told me I was at 4-5 centimeters-- half way there. I thought we would get settled in a birthing room, but there was a note on my chart that stated they expected a large baby and a sonogram had to confirm a smaller weight for me to be admitted. The office that did the scan the day before had not sent the results confirming Baby Deetz at 8 lbs 11 ozs, so I would have to wait a few hours and labor in the halls of the birth center. It was as good a place as any.

Mom, Aaron and I lingered in the family room and kitchen. I was walking the halls and swaying with contractions. I was still trying to drink fluids but with each intensifying stage, I would throw up. I found it to be a welcomed distraction, strangely enough. I needed to rest and try to get the baby down, so I sat on a birthing ball and Mom sat facing me on the bed. I would lean forward and rest on her between contractions and then I would lean back into Aaron during the contractions. It was a very smooth motion and helped me cope with the pain.

It was 9 am and Asya checked me again. I was at 7 centimeters. Good progress, but the baby still needed to come down lower. I was admitted to the birthing room and was told I could get in the bath tub if I wanted. I WANTED! So they ran the bath and I waited. What a soothing place to spend labor. The water took the edge off the ever-growing contractions and I was able to relax even more. I don't know how long I was in there, maybe an hour. I didn't want to get out but it was time to be examined again. I was 8 centimeters. Asya told me I could rest if I wanted to but if I walked around, we could bring the baby faster. I was pretty tired, having only slept 3 hours, so sooner sounded good to me.

The contractions were so intense, I took to moaning and leaning on the wall. Asya, Katherine, Aaron and my mom would massage my back and hips and follow me around with a glass of water. What tremendous support! I made a joke about getting back in the bath tub. Katherine said I could get back in the shower and she would spray warm water on my back. It was worth a try. I got in the tub and they put a stool for me to keep one leg up to open the pelvis and encourage the baby to keep coming down. At this point, my water hadn't broken yet and I was starting to have a hard time coping. Katherine was reminding me to breathe and I had to rub my belly during contractions to distract myself. It was a mantra in a way. All of the sudden, I felt a lot of pressure and my water broke like a water balloon. Thank goodness I was in the tub because it would have been quite a mess otherwise. There was quite a bit of meconium in the water. The midwives decided it was time to check me again in the hopes that we could start pushing.

It was 11:15 am and I was fully dilated and ready to push. Asya and Katherine told me how I should push, but it took me a while to get a rhythm. Aaron was sitting behind me for support but eventually they needed to change my position and give me some oxygen. So I laid on my side and continued to push. It felt like forever and I was afraid that I would not be able to get her out. Then I started to feel her coming through. I reached down and could feel her hairy head barely crowning. I pushed until I felt the "Ring of Fire" and waited for the perineum to stretch.

With the next contraction, I pushed and there she was, born at noon on February 18th. They put her on my chest and she cried and cried. I cried too. I couldn't believe she was finally here. Aaron and I went over the names we came in with and the only one that fit to a tee was Zoe Renee. She was perfect.  After eating some delicious Turkish food, we were home by 7 pm that night.

There was so much uncertainty at the end of my pregnancy, I had to open myself up to the possibility that my perfect birth would not be perfect. It may not happen at the birth center but I knew I would have all the support in the world. I was blessed to have a labor that progressed beautifully and the best environment in the world to labor in. Zoe knew what she was doing all along. We just needed to be patient.

I am so grateful to the midwives at the Brooklyn Birth Center for their courage and wisdom. If it were not for them, I would have been induced earlier and quite possibly sectioned. Because of their faith in a women's capacity to birth, Zoe and I had the best birth possible and Mom and baby could not be healthier or happier. Zoe is such a peaceful and sweet baby. I am blessed!

Nana Leaving Today

Today Nana Donna is leaving to go back home to Oregon. She was such a big help to have around while we were all waiting for Zoe to show up and to help out with the first few days of figuring out what to do with a baby. We'll be dropping her off at the airport, spinning around to another terminal, and picking up Grandpa Bill and Grandma Mary.

Here are the two Nana's right after Zoe's birth. It was an amazing moment to have both of them there in the room with us as she popped out into the world.

Visitors For Zoe

Yesterday Zoe had her first visitors come over to say hi. Ryan, Nate, Elizabeth, John, Candace, Jason and little baby Emma all stopped by to introduce themselves. Unfortunately Zoe was much more interested in sleeping and eating--not that I blame her, those are two of my favorite things as well. And while Zoe was sleeping Emma was stealing the show with all of her 4 month old cuteness. It was a fun, but exhausting day for Zoe.

Is that Ryan sporting his log lady pose with Zoe? Perfect. Ryan ended up being our DJ and spinning the vinyl all afternoon.

I think Nate was bit terrified of Zoe. But Zoe was totally into Nate. Actually I think Zoe started crying immediately after I took this shot. Sorry Nate.

Our neighbors Elizabeth and John were nice enough to stop by for the visit. John is an amazing chef at a local Brooklyn restaurant and brought us premade lazagna dinners. Mmmmm. I can't wait to break into those. Thanks John!

Jason (Emma's daddy) is an old pro at this by now. Perfect arm cradle position. I'm going to have to pick up a few pointers from him.

Here is Emma stealing the show from Zoe. You are awesome Emma.

Babies babies babies. Babies everywhere and a fun day for Zoe. Thanks everyone for stopping by.

Finger Toes

I just discovered Zoe has old lady finger toes.

When I visited uncle Bob in Colorado right after Alex was born he told me that he and Julie would stare at Alex for hours. They called it BabyTV. I thought he had lost his marbles, but now I understand.

Holey Moley She Is Here At Last!

So the little baby deetz finally arrived. And we decided on a name, Zoe Renee Deetz. Her arrival time was February 18 at noon, she weighed 8lbs. 3oz., and was 22.5" long. She's pretty awesome.

Everything went swimmingly and Kirsten did the whole birth au natural in nine hours. She's a champion. It is still a lot to take in--there aren't many life changing moments, but this is definately one of them.

SUCCESS!

So we finally completed a belly casting without plastering anyone to the wall or floor. What a difference a kit makes. The one we used is technically called a belly imprint. One cloth sheet covered in a plaster mixture made for a really beautiful shape. It dried in no time and was a snap to hang. I haven't decided whether I will paint it or not. There are certainly other things occupying the mind at the moment.
